Company history/background

The company is founded in 2021. The founders were looking were looking into taking over a supplier of self proclaimed biodegradable bags. However, there was no evidence for these claims. Instead of buying this company, we decided to dive into this problem of proving sustainability. We conducted around 30 interviews with packaging suppliers and buyers and learned that proving sustainability is difficult and leads to guesswork and false claims. To impact the switch to sustainable packaging, we needed to provide evidence based insights at scale for buyers and suppliers. With evidence, both sides would have a story about sustainability that is based on proof, instead of gut feeling. We teamed up with Sustainability Impact Metrics (a spin-off of the TU Delft). Together, we developed an instant, scalable and transparent life cycle assessment for packaging. With standardized emissions data, we could now run calculations about packaging footprint at scale. When testing prototypes of our model with buyers and suppliers, we already impacted decisions in favor of sustainability. We want to contribute to a more sustainable world and reach a saving of 100 million kg CO2 by 2025.

Unique selling points

Monetizing sustainability of packaging. Every Eco Passport can be shared, embedded in existing product pages or accessed by scanning printed QR code labels on the packaging. This means that buyers and consumers can access the evidence based sustainabilityclaims.

  • Benchmark packaging. Suppliers can benchmark packaging to that of competitors (we use anonymized data of other suppliers in our database), but also to see if packaging in the portfolio complies with various sustainability goals set by the EU or other authoritative institutions.
  • Our Eco Passports are not static, but are continuously updated with latest eco data.
  • Transparent and open source. The data and calculations are disclosed. If better data is available, we encourage suppliers to object or comment. With experts from our non-profit partner we can then improve our model.
  • Eco-cost model. Next to carbon, we use eco-costs as an indicator to express the amount of environmental burden of a product on the basis of prevention of that burden. This model is independently developed and is the most complete system for mentization of eco-burden in science. It's unique in the lifecycle assesment market.

Other

Evidence based insights in sustainability for entire packaging portfolio’s. We help packaging suppliers with reaching net zero goals and effectively monetize the sustainability of their packaging, with Eco Passports: an instant, scalable, transparent lifecycle analysis report for packaging. Our dashboard combines all Eco passport data and gives suppliers the insights they need to make evidence based decisions when evaluating their portfolio. We allow users to create scenarios to predict emissions and easily see how to improve in what step of the product life cycle. Users can also create benchmarks, where they compare their products against that of competitors, or scenario products. This is a great tool for sales managers, so they can actually prove the sustainability of their packaging. We also open up ways of monetizing Eco Passports. They can be shared, embedded in existing product pages or made accessible to consumers via printed QR code labels on the packaging. We believe that when suppliers and buyers have insights, they will make better decisions in favor of sustainability and we accelerate the switch to sustainable packaging.
